Jen Madigan’s photography has taken her to many parts of the world, but documenting the lives of families is the work she truly loves. Throughout her life Jen has been drawn to the camera, but 2009 is when she finally picked it up again to build a career. Now ten years in, the deep connections with the clients and families she works with is what motivates her to split time between Iowa and Ohio.

For those who are part of the Press Coffee community, Jen and her photos may seem familiar to you. She was formerly the first face you saw at Tru Salon before becoming a manager and has done photography work for them as well. Becoming close with many people and clients here in the Iowa City area, she was conflicted when her boyfriend got relocated to Cleveland, Ohio for work. A compromise was made that she would go with so long as she could return to Iowa as often as clients needed her. With everyone on board, she made the move and has been back five times so far this year with three more trips planned.

Jen’s bond with the people she has worked with is what gave her pause when the choice came to move. She started out by working with families before adding weddings to her repertoire but now limits those to five a year. Her main focus is on newborns and families. The relationship she builds with each client is proven by the lively candid shots produced in two-hour sessions she calls “A Day in the Life”. However, seeing parents nuzzle their new baby is what makes Lifestyle Newborn photoshoots her favorite.

To expand her travels and her photography skills, Jen started participating in a workshop called Study Abroad. In three years she’s been to Portugal, Iceland, and Greece to work, network, and explore. This summer she was able to check the Greek islands off her bucket list and even got to go on a five-hour catamaran ride in the Aegean sea. Remaining on her list of places to visit are Italy, Costa Rica, and Japan.

Whether she’s documenting the landscapes of Iceland or a family of five, Jen’s greatest interest is the story her photography tells. She feels honored to work with the families that hire her and sees her work as a gift of recording their memories. Many clients were friends to begin with, or are now, and her strong connection with them is how she makes her split-state life work.
